Questions & answers

Does Exterior 450 Stain need a topcoat?

Yes. Seal it with an exterior topcoat such as Exterior 450 Clear.

Which colors are there?

Aged Gray, Black Walnut, Butternut, Cedar, Chestnut, Coffee Bean, Mesquite, Natural Base, Red Mahogany and Stormy Gray.

How do I keep a Douglas fir door from blotching?

Fir is hard to stain evenly. Make a conditioner by mixing equal parts Exterior 450 Clear and the Exterior 450 stain color you chose; apply it, let it dry 2-3 hours (longer when it is humid), then stain. It may still blotch somewhat. More coats give a deeper color.

How soon can the project go outside?

Once it is topcoated, wait 5-6 days. The finish keeps hardening for about 20-21 days.

How long between coats?

Dry to the touch in 30+ minutes and ready to recoat after 2+ hours. Brush, roll or spray.
