Questions & answers
What are Enduro RTM Stains?
A water-based stain system: 12 stain concentrates plus a clear base, mixed to match almost any color. It is a thinner formula made for professional spray work, though it can also be brushed, rolled or padded on.
Do RTM stains need a topcoat?
Yes. They are for interior use, go on raw wood (not over an existing finish), and must be sealed with a topcoat.
Why won't the stain take on the grain of my oak?
Surface tension in the wood, sometimes caused by sanding, can keep the stain from biting into the grain. Try hand-applying a light first coat and then spraying a second coat without wiping it off. Or hand-apply the first coat, then tone the piece with topcoat mixed with 10-15% stain.
Can I tint a topcoat with RTM to tone a project?
Yes. RTM base colors can be mixed into General Finishes water-based topcoats (all except Conversion Varnish). Start with 5-10% by volume, build the color over several coats, and finish with a clear coat.
How long between coats?
Dry to the touch in 15-30+ minutes and ready to recoat after 1+ hour. For HVLP, a 0.9 mm to 1.1 mm tip is recommended.
